Captain Graylin Gant is the founder of NW Gulf Federal Pilots.  An expert in Marine Transportation, Captain Gant has been a master/operator for 28 years.  He operated a variety of vessels in different industries:  commercial deep sea fishing boats, charter/party boats, Inland towing vessels, Anchor Handling Tug Supply(AHTS) vessels, Deep Sea towing of semi-submersible drilling rigs, Cargo vessels, Tank ships, Lightering, Subsea Well Stimulation vessels and large Offshore Supply Ships in ultra deep waters.

Most of his maritime career was concentrated in the oilfield and transport of cargo while transiting in/out of the Galveston/Texas City, Houston, Sabine Pass, Calcasieu, Port Fourchon, SW Pass (Mississippi River) and Mobile ship channels.  Furthermore, he covered merely all the ship channels in coastwise trade on the Gulf coast from Tampa Bay, Florida to Brownsville, Texas. 

EDUCATION

Captain Gant holds an Associates of Applied Science degree in Diesel Mechanics (1983), a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in Business Prelaw (1998), all from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

LICENSES/ENDORSEMENTS (United States Coast Guard)

Master’s License – Issue no. 6, First class pilot licenses of Any Gross Tons (unlimited tonnage) upon the Galveston, Texas City and Calcasieu ship channels.  GMDSS and Marine radio licenses (Texas A & M) and Dynamic Position Operator (DPO) license unlimited (Nautical Institute).

CERTIFICATIONS and STCW 95 compliancy (Coast Guard approved)

Water Safety Skipper course (TX Parks/Wildlife 1977), Stability & Ballast control for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU) – Martin Int’l., Radar observer – Houston marine, Personal Survivor, First Aid/CPR and Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (Texas A & M), Ship Fire Fighting – Basic/Advanced, Vessel Security officer (VSO/SSO), Bridge Resource Management, Hazwoper, International Safety Management (ISM) supervisor and Safety Management Sys. (SMS), Streamlined Inspection Program (SIP) – Coast Guard Inspections, Pilot simulation training at the Maritime Pilots Institute (MPI) via Hornbeck Offshore services, HUET/Offshore water survival and Scuba Diver (NAUI 1982).

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS (Recent 10 years)

He worked for Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC from November 2000 to September 2010 with senior captain status; had an outstanding safety record with good communication/training skills with crew members and well versed in customer relations.  Emphasis for safety has always been his core responsibility in marine transportation for the safety of life at sea and to the protection of the environment.

FUTURE GOALS AND OBJECTIVE

Presently, he’s primed for a new business endeavor to become an entrepreneur providing Federal Pilotage to vessels transiting the Galveston Bay and Calcasieu Pass ship channels; leading to the Galveston Bay ports of Galveston, Texas City and Pelican Island; in addition, ports in Cameron and Lake Charles, Louisiana.  His intent is to create advanced positions for professional mariners to become Federal Pilots in the Galveston Bay and Calcasieu Pass ship channels.   Lastly, to provide competitive rates with quality services.
